On this trip through amazing arctic landscapes, Jomar seems to do everything in his power to avoid reaching his destination. In her desperation, Milja gives away the dearest thing she owns, for the kid to have better conditions than she manages to give him.It is Hønse-Lovisa that convinces her that the material benefits can never compensate for real love and care.

The doctor's son has just returned to town, having been sent down from the university, and is soon influenced by his Nazi-sympathizer uncle.
