OverView

Howard Spurlock, wrongfully accused of theft, believes police are seeking his arrest. On "the ragged edge," he takes refuge in China, where he meets and is nursed back to health by Ruth Endicott, daughter of a missionary. Belle Bennett plays as the widowed mother of seven children living in Sioux City, Iowa. She moves with them to Cambridge, Massachusetts in order to educate her children with culture and give them every advantage. Bennett, who is unversed in financial matters, soon faces poverty for herself and her children. She takes out a loan from an unscrupulous lender (played by Richard Tucker), who is so impressed by the charm and valiant spirit of Bennett than he neglects to ask her for collateral. Bennett, however, is only able to partially pay her creditors. Marion Nixon, Bennett's eldest daughter, is shocked by her mother's actions and attempts to sacrifice herself to Tucker in order to clear her mother's obligations, even though she is engaged to marry a well to do Harvard undergraduate, played by Rex Bell. This film is believed lost.

Increasingly more desperate Baring imprisons Alice in her room, but she escapes and flees to Whitworth in the middle of the night. Baring petitions the courts for her forced return just as Alice discovers she can dissolve the guardianship by marriage. Alice then marries Whitworth, thus defeating Baring's wicked schemes and securing a happy ending.

Ruth Travers, the young niece and ward of Howard Mason, elopes with Chadwick Blake to escape the advances of Gilbert Hilton, whom her uncle wants to force upon her to cover his embezzlement of Ruth's small fortune. She discovers too late that Blake already has a wife but makes the best of the situation until Mason's death, just after he has made a lucky gambling coup, leaves her a little money. Determined to escape, she goes to a small town where minister Daniel Clarkson becomes interested in her. Because James Lawton had sought marriage between Clarkson and his daughter, when Blake turns up, and Lawton learns the story, he denounces Ruth to the minister. When Clarkson learns the truth, he forgives Ruth and, knowing that he will lose his position, he enlists, promising to return and marry her when the war is over.

The Sea Wolf

Captain "Wolf" Larsen, the absolute master of a seal schooner, is a mystic and philosopher, though he rules his men with an iron hand. On a ferry going from San Francisco to Oakland, Van Weyden, a critic, and Maud Brewster, a novelist, meet in masquerade costumes and are forced overboard when their boat collides with a steamer. Humphrey, then Maud, are picked up by Larsen's crew. Because of her costume, Maud is taken for a boy and placed in the custody of Mugridge, the cook, who attempts to attack her upon discovering her identity. Larsen takes her under his protection and decides to marry her; but as the ceremony begins, the crew mutinies, and Larsen is stricken with blindness as he faces the rebels. The ship is set afire, and though Humphrey and Maud are rescued by another steamer, Larsen, deserted by his crew, refuses to quit his ship and is enveloped in flames.

The Silent Witness

The president of a state bank, guilty of malfeasance bribes the District Attorney to suppress the case. The DA’s secretary takes a photograph of the moment when a considerable sum of money changes hands extorting his employer. The dissolute secretary makes advances on a friend’s wife and as the husband rushes the roue a lamp is upset, plunging the place into darkness. A flash and a shot and the young blackmailer falls to the floor dead. The wife thinks the husband fired in anger, the husband believes the wife shot to protect herself. The District Attorney, the guilty man, is called upon to prosecute and accuses them both. An unexpected witness appears at the last moment and the pair are set free.
