Starting his own organization, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, he went on to sink illegal whaling ships, stopped Canadian seal hunts for ten years, permanently halted sealing in British Isles, killing of dolphins on Iki Island, Japan, etc. This documentary witnesses his latest campaigns and explores the personal and environmental history of this controversial marine conservationist. The Bear Inside a Whale

In “The Bear Inside a Whale,” he and his family discuss racism, identity, religion, creation and art, along with the cultural extinction of the Beothuk of Newfoundland. Throughout the film, we follow Stan carving a bear out of a whale vertebra. And we visit The Rooms (museum) in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where Stan talks about viewing and reclaiming Indigenous artefacts.

The film accompanies a motley crew of idealists on board the Greenpeace ship "Esperanza" on their mission to prevent the Japanese whaling fleet from hunting the endangered animals in the Arctic Ocean. The documentary shows how the Esperanza attempts to pick up the trail of the whalers in the endless expanses of the Southern Ocean, who for their part want to avoid a confrontation. Using tiny inflatable boats, the animal rights activists try to obstruct the fleet as much as possible, risking their lives. A race against time begins. Angela Graas' film largely dispenses with gory images and simple black-and-white imagery.
