Wooed by professor-turned-preacher Adolphus Cusins, Barbara eventually grows disillusioned with her causes and begins to see things from her father's perspective.

Their financial worries deepen when Heikki, as a union representative, has to deal with a strike at his workplace and illegal work practices.
