The program features surrealistic and often satirical humor, public-access television–style musical acts, bizarre faux-commercials, and editing and special effects chosen to make the show appear camp. The program featured a wide range of actors, spanning from stars such as Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, David Cross, Bob Odenkirk, Will Forte and Zach Galifianakis, to alternative comedians like Neil Hamburger, to television actors like Alan Thicke, celebrity look-alikes and impressionists. The creators of the show have described it as "the nightmare version of television."

The programme is about the bizarre residents of the fictional island of Jinsy and based on the island of Guernsey, where the two writers are from. The Wedge was an Australian sketch show created by Ian McFadyen and produced by Network Ten. The show's two seasons starred Dailan Evans, Adam Zwar, Jason Gann, Rebel Wilson, Kate Jenkinson, Katrina Mathers, Anthony Ahern and Julie Eckersley, with appearances from Julia Zemiro, Ross Daniels, Marney McQueen, Aidan Fennessy, Cori Hopper and Frieda McKenna. The main ensemble cast was joined in series two by Damian Callinan and Cal Wilson. It ran for two seasons, airing 2006 and 2007 and averaged a million viewers per episode through most of the first series. A spin-off mockumentary titled Marks Loves Sharon featuring one of the show's characters, Mark Wary (Jason Gann), was produced by Network Ten and premiered in June 2008.

Characters include Kelly McGlade; Burnistoun's answer to Beyoncé; Paul and Walter, the disturbingly odd brothers that run an ice cream van; Jolly Boy John, who tells the things that make him "For Real" to the accompaniment of a happy hardcore soundtrack ; McGregor and Toshan, best friends Scott and Peter and the Burnistoun Butcher, a serial killer who is unhappy with the way he is being portrayed by the media. Connell and Florence have previously written sitcoms Empty and Legit and created characters for Chewin' the Fat and The Karen Dunbar Show. The third series started filming in January 2012 and began its run in August 2012. It has been confirmed on the show's Facebook page that series 3 will be its last.
